Excellent audiobooks are those that really capture the essence of each narrative as well as the spirit of the story itself.  The Audio Publishers Association (APA) chooses winners of the Audie Awards each year. These books are chosen for excellence in audio publishing and are great choices for those who are either long time audio fans or just getting started with audiobooks. The list of nominees for 2017 has been announced. These are just a few highlights that caught my eye.  A link to all the nominees for 2017 can be found at https://www.audiofilemagazine.com/audies/.   Contact the library to inquire about these audiobooks or click each title to view them in our online catalog.

Nominated for Audiobook of the Year:

Colson Whitehead’s historical novel, The Underground Railroad has had quite a success as it has not only been a New York Times Bestseller but the winner of the National Book Award. It was also an Oprah’s Book Club novel.  The story follows the journey of Cora, a Southern slave, as she tries to escape to freedom before the Civil War breaks out.  This audiobook is also nominated for Best Female Narrator as well as Best in Literary Fiction & Classics.

Nominated for Best in Nonfiction:

Another NY Times chart- topper, J.D Vance’s Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and a Culture in Crisis has caused a considerable amount of buzz in 2016. This memoir chronicles the life of a  former United States Marine and his struggles growing up in Ohio.  His account sheds light on the hardships and decline of working class white Americans within the context of a changing economy where the American Dream seems unattainable.

Nominated for Best in Young Adult:

Even though this novel is tagged as YA, Salt to the Sea has had a very positive response from adult readers and has been hailed one of top books for young adults (2016/2017) by Booklist, Goodreads, YALSA, and others.  Four narrators bring each of Ruta Sepetys’ characters to life within the setting of WWII.  A German, Polish, Prussian, and Lithuanian are trapped in the conflict between Russia and Germany, each carrying secrets and the will to survive against all odds.

Nominated for Best Multi-voiced Performance:

Best-selling author Jodi Picoult tackles weighty topics such as race and privilege in her latest novel. Based on a true story, Small Great Things is about an African American nurse charged with the murder of an infant.  Picoult’s three main characters are voiced by separate narrators who bring life to Ruth, the main character; Turk, the baby’s father; and Kennedy, the lawyer who takes on Ruth’s case.
