January 18th is “Winnie the Pooh Day” in honor of A.A. Milne’s birthday.  Milne was inspired to write the famous stories by his son’s collection of stuffed animals.  The stories of Pooh, Eeyore, Tigger, and Piglet all came to life in order entertain the real  Christopher Robin.

Milne was born in London in 1882. He did not start his writing career with stories for children, though.  In fact, he went to Cambridge to study math.  He ended up becoming more interested in writing and after graduation, got a job creating humorous pieces for a magazine.  After serving in World War I, Milne wrote a couple plays and some poetry.  It was not until after his son was born in 1920 that he began to write for children.  Winnie-the-Pooh  was written in 1926 followed by The House at Pooh Corner in 1928.

After his death in 1956, Milne left an enduring legacy  in literary history.  His timeless stories have touched the hearts of children all over the world.  Today you can see the real Pooh, Piglet, and friends at the New York Public Library.

The film, Goodbye Christopher Robinwas just out in theaters this past October.  It tells the story of A.A Milne’s relationship with his son, Christopher Robin, who inspired the stories of Winnie-the-Pooh.   The photo at the right shoes Milne, Christopher Robin, and the real Pooh bear in 1926.
