#FDL: Summer Reading for Teens and Adults Too

The Summer Reading Program kicked off at our library on June 1st. What you may not realize is that summer reading is not just for kids. Teens and adults are encouraged to participate as well! If you already enjoy reading, joining the program and earning points will be a breeze. Here are some things you may not know about our library’s summer reading program.

Read for Prizes: For every 30 minutes of reading, high school students and adults can record 1 point on a point card. Points can be redeemed upstairs in the Adult Services Department once per week. Teen and adult prizes are different from the prizes given out to children. For example, you could win gift cards and coupons from area businesses like Firehouse Pizza, Chick-fil-A, or Potbelly’s. We also have coupons for library fine forgiveness or our Coffee Corner. The catch is that these prizes are only available until supplies last. Get your reading in and redeem them early. Once you reach the maximum of 80 points, turn in the point card for your age group’s grand prize drawing.

We have a theme: Every year the Summer Reading Program has a theme that is adopted by most area libraries. This year it’s STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math). STEAM is an educational approach to learning that encourages critical thinking, creative problem solving, and collaboration. Most of the programs offered this summer have something to do with STEAM education.

Attend Programs: Want to take a break from reading but still earn points? That’s okay. Summer reading participants can earn up to 10 points on a point card for attending summer reading programs. We have quite a variety of programs for teens and adults this summer including 3D printing, Maker Day, Bad Art Night, interior design, and a presentation on the solar eclipse. Keep track of the programs you attend on your point card as well. Follow this link to view our event calendar.

Fine Arts at Fondulac District Library

Fine Arts at FDL expands the library’s mission by stimulating imagination and fostering lifelong learning, and gives local artists the opportunity to present new work in a public setting.

The library has display areas for both hanging and three-dimensional pieces of art.
All display areas are within the library and are publicly viewable during regular library hours.
The library encourages all artists in East Peoria and surrounding communities to submit an application for consideration.
Applications are welcome anytime and are reviewed on a rolling basis. To be considered, please review the information and policy and complete the online application available here.

Star Wars Day 2017

Fondulac District Library announces Star Wars Day, which celebrates reading and the stories of one of the most popular sagas of all time. The all-ages event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 8, 2017, at Fondulac District Library in East Peoria, Illinois.

Free activities and programs for all ages will run throughout the day and include a new, expanded Jedi training, crafts, a sketch workshop with artist Kiley Beecher, games, Star Wars Bingo, prize drawings, and much more. Special guests from the 501^st Legion, the Rebel Legion, and the Mandalorian Mercs costume clubs will be in attendance and available for photographs. Additionally, members of the East Peoria Robo Raiders and Retro Robotics, local First Tech Challenge (FTC) teams, will participate in a presentation and demonstration of the real-life “droids” they design, build, and take to competition. The library also offers Star Wars-related books and movies on display and available for check out.

The Friends of FDL Request Book Donations

The Friends of Fondulac District Library are accepting book donations, specifically paperbacks, to support our military troops.

The Friends mail donated books to military bases overseas and stateside for the troops and their families through the program, Operation Paperback. The most requested books are mystery, sci-fi, biographies, and nonfiction on a variety of topics, including military history, politics, business, and self-help. Donations may be made any time the library is open. Donations are currently scheduled to be packaged and shipped on March 8, 2017.

Operation Paperback is a national, non-profit organization, whose volunteers collect gently-used books and send them to American troops overseas, as well as veterans and military families here at home. Since 1999, the organization has shipped over 2.2 million books. Learn more at operationpaperback.org.

The Friends support the library’s mission through advocacy, fundraising, and volunteerism. Donations of fiction and nonfiction books, music CDs, audiobooks on CD, and DVD or Blu-ray videos and films to their ongoing book sale at the library are always welcome.

1KB4K is an early literacy program designed to promote reading to babies, infants, and toddlers with the goal of having 1,000 books read before Kindergarten.

Getting Started:

Register in the Youth Services Department to receive a progress chart to track the first 100 books read to the child.
Once the chart is complete, return it to the library for a free book and the next progress chart.
A certificate of achievement, book, and book bag will be awarded when the goal of reading 1000 books is met!

Library Hosts Local Author Fair

Fondulac District Library hosts its first ever Author Fair on January 21, 2017, at 1 p.m. Local authors will discuss their books, answer questions, and sell and sign copies of their books.

Paranormal author Sylvia Shults will present a keynote address, and horror author Joe Chianakas will answer questions about the publication process. Attendees are invited to enjoy an author meet and greet as well as dramatic readings from selected authors. Books may be purchased at the event, and a portion of all sales will be donated to the Friends of Fondulac District Library. There will also be prize drawings.

The library encourages local authors to submit an application to promote, sell, and sign copies of their work at the event. Applications are available here or at the library. The deadline to apply is December 27.

Book Clubs at the Library

Fondulac District Library is currently offering two book clubs for adult readers.

The “Out of the Box Book Club” takes place on the 3^rd Wednesday of every month at 6 p.m. at locations throughout East Peoria.

The “Adult Book Club” meets on the 3^rd Monday of every month at 1:30 p.m. in the library’s conference room.

New Art Exhibit on Display at FDL

Fondulac District Library is proud to announce a new exhibit on display for its ongoing Fine Arts at FDL program.

A collage series, The Art of Judith Koren Shanahan, will be on display through the end of the year. Shanahan uses acrylic paints, specialty papers, recycled ephemera, textures, and more to represent and interpret a multitude of subjects. Her professional art training began at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and continued at the Instituto de Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. She has exhibited locally, as well as in Rockford, and her pieces have been purchased by people across the country.
