Margaret’s Unicorn by Briony May Smith
Genre: Fantasy
Suggested age: 3-8 years old
What is this book about? The story of Margaret begins with her family moving to a home by the sea in order to be near her grandma. Shortly after arriving, she goes exploring the land around her grandma’s house, and stumbles upon unicorns flying in the distance. One unicorn, just a calf, is left behind. Margaret takes them in and raises them as her own. As the year goes on, the unicorn grows with Margaret in her family’s new home, and helps her adjust to life by the sea.
My Review: Smith does an amazing job at taking an iconic mythical creature and adding such a peaceful and whimsical spin to it. Most stories about unicorns are flashy, sparkly, and awe-inspiring. However, in Margaret’s Unicorn, the relationship between Margaret and her unicorn is more natural and peaceful. The story is more melodic, like the sea, rather than the typical excitement or silliness found in books about unicorns. Though it is always fun to read funny and exciting books, sometime kids and parents just need a good cozy story to read together on a late night or rainy day.
