FDL Reads: Into the Uncut Grass

Into the Uncut Grass by Trevor Noah

Reviewer:  Jacob Roberts, Youth Services Specialist

Genre:  Juvenile Fiction

Suggested Age:  Children of All Ages

What is this book about? Into the Uncut Grass follows a young boy, who is tired of listening to the rules of his mother. One day he decides that instead of doing his chores, he will venture out into the unknown world of the uncut grass. Of course, he makes sure to bring his best friend, Walter, the bear. Although the boy is adamant about never returning home, the more he encounters away from home, and the more he listens to Walter’s wise words, he starts to wonder if perhaps it isn’t too late to return home after-all.

My Review: Trevor Noah has written a whimsical and endearing story of friendship, curiosity, youthful rebellion, and (most importantly) the love between a mother and child. Although the book takes just 30 minutes to read, it is a refreshing break from the anxieties of the world around us. It is perfect to read alone, with a friend, or the whole family! It reminds the reader that they too once were a child seeking adventure and rebellion. However, it also reminds the reader what a mother’s love truly means for a young child.

Rating:  5/5
