What is This Book About? Aliya has gone to the same school with the same friends since kindergarten, and isn’t excited to give up the beaches of Tampa for snowy Milwaukee. She tries to make the best of it by making friends at her new, bigger Islamic school and joining the all-girls’ basketball team. They had an awful record in the past, but a new coach pushes them hard to turn their losing streak around. With a co-captain who isn’t her biggest fan and increased media attention as the Peace Academy team starts winning, Aliya tries her best to improve her skills, keep up with school, and find the confidence it takes to represent herself and her faith in the media.
My Review: This graphic novel has a lot of humor and heart, and I really enjoyed watching Aliya and her teammates gain confidence throughout the season with help from their coach. And it was great to learn that author Hena Khan was inspired by a real-life story! After the arrival of a new basketball coach for their 2018-2019 season, the Salam School girls’ varsity high school team had their best season to date and received national attention. Aliya is a great example of how we shouldn’t dwell on our mistakes, but should acknowledge our successes in equal measure. This book is a great option for sports enthusiasts, as well as anyone who needs a little boost of confidence in their lives.
