The Wolf King by Lauren Palphreyman
Genre: Romantasy
Suggested age: Adults
What is this book about? Outlander meets Twilight in this Scottish-inspired fantasy. Born into a feudal system where she is treated as property, Aurora is a princess forced into an arranged betrothal. When she locks eyes with a wolf shifter captured by her father, she begins to question her purpose and resists the arranged marriage planned for her near future. Later that evening, the wolf shifter kidnaps her and takes her far into the northlands where the wolves live. As Callum becomes her protector, Aurora begins to have feelings for him and imagines a new life where she has more agency and choice.
My Review: This was a fun, short read and I enjoyed the characters. Palphreyman does a great job developing the tension between Aurora and Callum. Though there is some political drama amongst the wolf clans, the main story is the forbidden romance. The plot in the middle section could have been developed a bit more and the main story seems to be leading towards a predictable trope. This did not deter my enjoyment of the book, however. This novel does end on a cliffhanger, but the sequel The Night Prince is published. Wolf King is for fans of the Omegaverse who enjoy historical fantasy set in a medieval time period.
