Have you heard of novels-in-verse? They are books that look like chapter books, but offer a more creative and engaging way to read a story. They are a great for any kids who are just getting into poetry, but don’t know where to start. They tend to be quicker reads, but often deal with heavy questions that kids may have about the world around them. If you are interested in learning more or checking out these materials at our library, here is a list of some novels-in-verse that are set in nature!
Safe Harbor by Padma Venkatraman
Geetha and her mom leave India and arrive in Rhode Island for a fresh start. However, a fresh start also comes with new changes.
With these changes, Geetha finds both bullies and friends in the most unlikely of places. One friend she finds is an injured seal. As the year goes on she makes even more friends, who help her take care of both the seal and learn what it means to take care of the ocean as well.
The Trouble with Heroes by Kate Messner
In this story of adventure, Finn Connelly finds himself on a treacherous mountain hike, with a dog he doesn’t know. It all started when he kicked over the tomb stone of a local mountain climber. To reconcile the damage to her daughter, he is tasked with climbing the mountains, as he faces his own internal struggles with the passing of his dad years before.
Pearl struggles with depression. She also loves the sea and all of the creatures that come with it. She identifies best with the octopus and their millions of receptors. However, she wishes she had more of a shell like the turtle to protect her from all of the negative thoughts. Through therapy, family support, and by doing some of the impossible things in life, she is able to find herself again, even if she doesn’t feel completely whole anymore.
